Chapter 8
Pinterest is not an app I use often, but I definitely used to. Middle school and early high-school I was very into Pinterest, and even now if I search my name on Google I find Pinterest boards covered in Taylor Swift and the ugliest dresses I swore I would buy for homecoming. I had a very short but powerful mood board and Pinterest phase but I grew out of it. The only time I ever use Pinterest now is when I google some random craft for kids I’m babysitting and the link takes me to the website. I don’t think I ever realized Pinterest would be a good place to advertise a business, but thinking of it as an aesthetically pleasing way to find businesses is very smart. I definitely would say I am drawn to businesses that are aesthetically pleasing on social media or that sell their products that are also very aesthetically pleasing. It sucks you in when something is pretty, and I think you are also more likely to repost it back onto your social media, which creates a cycle that could be very helpful to boost the business and reach many people. I also love that Pinterest is a female dominated app, which could be used to many female brands advantage. The Pinterest algorithm seems a bit complicated, but I like how you prioritize the most important pins first, and then what else you post is less likely to be at the top of the pinned posts. This could also help people who create brands for themselves, but then maybe use their own brand to start some kind of business. Pinterest to me, is somewhat of a bridge between the straight forward marketing and the straightforward posting. A lot of times I fall onto Pinterest organically, and what really draws me in is a bright post that has something interesting as the cover.
Olivia, I totally relate with you on how you can search your name in google and find pictures of your old pins from back in 2013 and realizing “what was I thinking??” hahah! I also this its very interesting how you brought up about how Pinterest is a female dominated app and can be a great marketing tool for female brands!
