Influencers and Podcasting

Influencers are such a big part of social media today, and I think they play a big role in our generation. While influencer can be a somewhat general term, my mind goes straight to social media and those who use platforms to market themselves. Social media influencers seem to be very popular today, and I think it is one of the biggest ways to sell products. I definitely am persuaded by people on my social media, especially when something is aesthetic looking. When someone has a platform that shows a life that seems put together, you are more likely to do things they do. You want your life to be as put together as theirs, so you’ll buy a product to get you there. I think there is an aspect of danger in this, specifically when an influencer shows things that may not be the truth. They are showing the good parts of their life, and may be promoting an unhealthy version of that.

This week, I created my podcast and interviewed Peyton Rogers, a senior at ONU. She has her own podcast ‘Crack the Egg’ where she interviews her friends about different topics every week. Lately she’s been on a break from her podcast, but she posts on Instagram twice a week. Her Instagram is a mix of promoting her podcast and personal posting, promoting the life of a theatre major living in Ada. She’s about to go out into the world and start her professional career as an actor, and we discussed the role of social media in that life transition. We also discussed the line between professional and personal posting, especially in a theatre setting where you are trying to market yourself to casting directors. You want to be yourself, but you also want to make sure you are marketable. Peyton is one of the most inspiring people I know, and she puts her all into everything she does. We discussed the use of Instagram, and how it hasn’t been easy to grow her account. Most of her followers and listeners are her closest friends, but slowly she’s starting to branch out. The link to her podcast (and mine) is below! Check her out, so we can say we knew her once she gets famous!

  1. Olivia , it's interesting how you mentioned that social media influencers can be harmful to the internet. I personally agree with that due to the fact I have fallen into those traps of being sucked into buying a false product. I love how you had the chance to interview your friend that has her own podcast. The idea of creating a personal podcast and explaining life through speaking with friends is thrilling. I've wanted to start a podcast for some time now but I have yet to see if its still for me (:
