Tech Week

This week is tech week for ONU’s Beauty and the Beast! So much has been happening this week, including 20 hours of rehearsals over the weekend. Starting our tech week off strong! Over the weekend, the rehearsals are much more for the tech team than it is for the actors. It’s a lot of standing around and waiting for people to decide what kind of lights they want and trying to time out all of the cues perfectly. Every time someone comes on stage and off there is a specific light cue, sound cue, or set piece moving. Not only are there cues at every scene change, there is also many specific cues throughout each scene. Every time you hear a sound that is not coming from someone on stage, or you see a light or set change, there is a team of people moving each one. Not only is there someone physically moving each set piece, but there is someone in the booth waiting for the specific line to cue that change. So many things can go wrong, if even one cue is missed which is why it’s so important we rehearse! This is a very tech heavy show, and we are lucky to have so many people working hard behind the scenes. Emily, our stage manager is behind it all calling every cue and making sure everything runs smooth. As for the cast on stage, this is our first time getting to work with the orchestra, our set, and our costumes! Below is a picture of me in my costume, during my mic check!

The stage is a bit bigger than where we usually rehearse, so getting to use the set and finally use the spacing that we will use during the show is so much fun. Using our costumes is one of my favorite parts, because it’s so exciting to get to see everyone else and see how they will all be put together. For this show, our costumes are huge which makes moving around the stage a bit more difficult than moving during rehearsals. For my costume, I have a corset, a very large skirt and a big wig that makes it slightly hard to move around in. It’s all part of the fun of tech week though! It definitely helps find the last touches with your character, once you get to start playing around in your character’s clothes. I am so excited for the show to open, and I hope you all come to see! You can get tickets at the Freed Center or on their website!

  1. Seems like there is a lot of work that goes into running a show. I have been to some productions before but never knew how much work went into tech week. I think that all of the people behind the scenes are just as important as the actors because they make sure the show runs smoothly. Hope everything goes well with your show!

  2. Wow, this gave me flashbacks to plays in grade school. I know tech week was always a stressful time with long practices. Figuring out all the bugs and kinks before showtime is very important. I can't imagine how intense it must be at the college level. Although it seems like a lot of work, it will all pay off in the end. I wish you guys the best of luck with your shows!

  3. Hi Olivia! Four days of tech week down, three more to go! I am definitely working hard out in the house, but I am so impressed by you and the other cast members in our production. It is so magical getting to see everything coming together and knowing that I am a part of this fantastic production. I am so excited to watch you up there this weekend and make this show one to remember!

  4. I can't wait to this production! It seems as though tech week is a very fast-paced and stressful time, but also riveting and full of memories for you guys. I was a part of stage crew in high school, and though I am sure that is completely different than being part of a college production, this post still brings back fond memories of a hectic week leading up to a great show, one to be proud of. Good luck everyone!

  5. Reading this blog actually brought me back to when my sister-in-law when in high school and she was in school plays and theatre. It was always a ton of work for her but I actually got interested and enjoyed watching her perform. I really do admire how hard all of you work and I hope to make it to a show!

  6. Olivia, I loved reading your post! I've never been in a production, so it was super interesting to learn about what goes on behind the scenes of tech week. It definitely sounds super hectic and like a lot of hard work, but also super fun and rewarding. I know once it all comes together your hard work is going to pay off and the show will be amazing. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope to be able to make it to one of the shows!
